We have been married for over 30 years now and first visited Powfoot in the early days of our relationship. We loved the beach and the village and came back to reminisce in 2020 for a holiday. The house which is now our holiday home was for sale at the time.
We are delighted to be the new owners and by renting our home out for some weeks each year we hope you will enjoy Powfoot as much as we do. it's a great place to chill out and there are plenty of adventures to be had in the area from the beaches and the conservation areas to outlet village shopping, family attractions and many other places of interest. From the coastline to the countryside, there are many stunning views as you travel around.
The house is well equipped with a range of amenities including:
Other amenities include:
Powfoot was a fishing village and the original white fishermen's cottages still remain. Robert Burns is rumoured to have stayed in one of the cottages near the entrance to the village. In around 1894, local builders who had made their fortune in Merseyside, returned to the area and developed the red-brick houses that were intended to be part of a larger seaside holiday resort. The design of the future resort was the brainchild of wealthy English industrialist and manufacturer Edward Brook who, following his purchase of nearby Kinmount estate at Cummertrees in 1896, started by laying roads out to the shore and creating a series of ornamental ponds. The Bowling Pavilion was built around 1907 and the remains of an old Victorian tidal pool can still be seen on the beach.
Today, Powfoot is still a peaceful place, with birds chirping in the morning and beautiful sunsets. We love walking along the beach in the morning, reading a book or popping out for a drink or meal at the local hotel.
There is lots to see and do locally. Directly in front of the cottage is a 9-hole putting green. It’s free to use and the putters and golf balls are in the grey box in the far corner. There is also a golf course which is accessed from Cummertrees a few miles away and there is plenty of fishing locally on the River Annan.
The town of Annan is less than 10 minutes drive and has a train station, bus station, a selection of restaurants, take-aways, local shops and familiar brands including Tesco and Aldi. There is also a family run cinema which shows a good range of films. You can see what’s on here. And a soft play centre, Farmers Den, just across from the cinema.
Annandale whisky distillery was established in 1836 and a new visitor centre opened in 2014 which offers tours of the distillery. Also nearby is the Devil’s Porridge Museum which tells the story of the explosives mixed mostly by women in factories at Gretna during World War 1. Plus the large Gretna Gateway outlet village is about 15 minutes drive.
There are many adventures to be had including Caerlaverock Castle, Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, Threave Garden, Robert Burns House, Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura, Dumfries Aviation Museum, Drumlanrig Castle, and Mabie Farm Park.
Less well-known attractions include the house and garden which inspired JM Barrie to write Peter Pan. Moat Brae house and the Neverland Discovery garden are located in Dumfries and there is free parking at the local school at weekends and during the holidays.
Further afield you can pop over the border and visit Hadrian's Wall and the Lake District. Or stay in Scotland and head to the beach at Rockcliffe, the picturesque villages of Kippford and Port Patrick and lots of places in between.
The South West Costal 300 route has many beautiful towns and villages waiting to be discovered, such as Drummore Scotland's most southerly village. Drummore is further South than both Newcastle and Carlisle and nearby attractions include Scotland’s Most Southerly Point where you can visit the RSPB Reserve, climb to the top of the lighthouse and visit the lighthouse exhibition. We are still exploring!
